ZEUS – KING OF THE GODS

The king of the gods is represented in the painting “Zeus with the Aegis”, by Carla Roselli . He is caught in the act of defeating one of the Giants, sons of the Earth, Mimas the destroyer. The Giant could imitate every shape and assume any form he wanted, according to his name (Euripides, “Ion” v.215). Zeus first paralyzes him shaking the “frightening, tasselled aegis”, then spears him with the dreadful thunderbolt. Finally he burns him to ashes.

The king, also called by Homer “he of the black clouds”, is the master of storms, dangerous, sudden and flaming.

ZEUS – RE DEGLI DEI

Nel dipinto “Zeus Egioco” di Carla Roselli è raffigurato Zeus, il re degli dei, figlio di Crono. Egli è colto nell’atto di sconfiggere uno dei Giganti, figli della Terra, Mimante il distruttore. Il Gigante poteva imitare ogni forma e assumere qualunque aspetto volesse (Euripide, “Ione”, v. 2015). Zeus prima lo paralizza scuotendo l’ egida “tremenda, guarnita di fiocchi”, poi lo trafigge con l’ immane fulmine. Infine lo brucia e riduce in cenere.

Il re, anche chiamato da Omero l'”adunatore di nere nubi”, è il signore della tempesta, pericoloso, improvviso e fiammeggiante.

APOLLO – ARCHER GOD

“Apollo Undefeated”, the far-shooting Archer among the greek gods, is painted by Vanessa Foschi the moment before slaying with his golden sword Porphyrion, the king of the sons of the Earth, after having put him down with an arrow of his silver bow.

In the painting the foot of the god rests on mice, like in the sanctuary of Sminthian Apollo in Ionia, where, as witnessed by Strabo, XIII, tame  mice were fed and worshipped, to propitiate the god, for Apollo can deploy and disengage legions of mice as he wishes.

APOLLO – DIO ARCIERE

“Apollo Invitto”, il lungisaettante Arciere fra gli dei greci, è dipinto da Vanessa Foschi il momento prima di uccidere con la sua spada d’oro Porfirione, il re dei figli della Terra, dopo averlo abbattuto con una freccia dell’arco d’argento.

Nel dipinto il piede del dio posa su topi, come nel santuario di Apollo Sminteo in Ionia, dove, come testimoniato da Strabone, XIII, venivano nutriti e venerati topi mansueti, per propiziare il dio, poiché Apollo può schierare e ritrarre legioni di topi come desidera.

ATHENA – GODDESS OF PREDATION

“Athena Predatory” is the one, among the olympian gods, who rules over  predation. The deity is depicted by Vanessa Foschi while crushing to death with her snakes Alcyoneus, one of the so-called  “Giants”, offspring of Gaea (the Earth). The goddess weares the Aegis, cradle of primordial feathered reptiles with the head of the Gorgon. She holds the shield inlaied with animated scenes of predation from the human and the animal world after the style of the renowned shields of Hercules, Achilles and Aeneas.

 ATENA – DEA DELLA PREDAZIONE

“Atena Predatrice” è colei, fra gli  dei olimpici, che controlla  la predazione. La divinità è raffigurata da Vanessa Foschi mentre stritola a morte con i suoi serpenti  Alcioneo, uno dei cosiddetti “Giganti”, progenie di Gaia (la Terra). La dea indossa l’Egida, culla di primordiali rettili piumati, con la testa della Gorgone. Porta lo scudo intarsiato con animate scene di predazione dal mondo umano ed animale alla maniera dei famosi scudi di Eracle, Achille ed Enea.

BACCHUS – GOD OF FREEDOM

In the painting “Bacchus and Pentheus” by Vanessa Foschi there’s  Bacchus/Dionysus, the twice-born among the celestial gods. He is depicted while leading the king of Thebes Pentheus to Mount Cithairon and his doom. He is disguised like a woman to spy on the sacred rites of the Bacchants/Maenads, forbidden to men. The red robes foreshadow his bloody slaughtering at their hands. His eyes have slit pupils like a snake to remind of his ancestry: in fact his father Echion leaped from the Earth in which were planted the teeth of Ares’s fateful snake.

BACCO – DIO LIBERATORE

Nel dipinto “Bacco e Penteo” di Vanessa Foschi, c’è Bacco/Dioniso, il “nato due volte” fra gli dei celesti. Egli è raffigurato mentre conduce il re di Tebe Penteo al Monte Citerone ed alla sua rovina. Penteo è travestito come una donna per spiare sui sacri riti delle Baccanti/Menadi, vietati agli uomini. La veste rossa prefigura il suo sanguinoso squartamento per mano loro. I suoi occhi hanno pupille verticali come quelle dei rettili per evocare la sua ascendenza: infatti suo padre Echione balzò dalla Terra in cui furono seminati i denti del fatidico serpente di Ares.

MARS – GOD OF WAR

In the painting “Mars Father” by Carla Roselli is depicted Mars, one of the latin gods, the father  of the roman people through Romulus. He drives a Golden chariot on the parapet of which is chiseled a white sow with some of her thirty piglets. She is the one prophesied by Tiber, one of the italian fluvial gods to Aeneas,  as omen of the end of his research.

Next to them are engraved a woodpecker and a fig,  totem animal and  tree  sacred to Mars among the Latin people.  As said by Plutarch in the “Life of Romulus”, the woodpecker was seen taking morsels to  abandoned Romulus and Remus  and helping feeding them together with the she -wolf.

On the ground are portrayed geese as a reminder of their helpful squawking during the raid of the Gauls and the she-wolf who nursed the twins Romulus and Remus.

MARTE – DIO DELLA GUERRA

Nel dipinto “Mars Pater” di Carla Roselli è raffigurato Marte, uno degli dei latini, il “padre” del popolo romano attraverso Romolo. Egli è alla guida di una biga d’oro sul parapetto della quale è cesellata una scrofa bianca con alcuni dei suoi trenta maialini.  Ella è la stessa che fu profetizzata dal Tevere, uno degli dei fluviali italici ad Enea come fine della sua ricerca.

Accanto ad essa sono rappresentati un picchio, ed un fico, animale totemico e pianta sacri a Marte, fra i popoli latini. Come detto da Plutarco nella “Vita di Romolo”, il picchio fu visto portare bocconi di cibo agli abbandonati Romolo e Remo ed aiutare a sfamarli insieme alla lupa.

Sul terreno sono raffigurate delle oche, in memoria del loro salvifico starnazzare durante la calata dei Galli e la lupa che allattò i gemelli  Romolo e Remo.

RHEA, GREAT MOTHER OF GODS

In this work Carla Roselli catches the mother of the gods in the act of killing the spawn of Gaia. The goddess focuses her power through a lion.

She is also the mistress of wild beasts.  That is the reason why the lion, king of animals, springs from her bosom to devour his enemy.

REA, GRAN MADRE DEGLI DEI

In quest’opera Carla Roselli cattura la madre degli dei nell’atto di uccidere la progenie di Gaia. La dea focalizza il suo potere attraverso un leone.

Ella è anche la signora delle fiere. Questo è il motivo per cui il leone, re degli animali, balza dal suo grembo per divorare l’avversario.

ROMULUS AND REMUS

Carla Roselli in this painting  depicts the herdsman who found, by will of the gods, the twins Romulus and Remus. Next to them sits the tawny wolf, beast sacred to their father, who rescued them from the waters.

In the backgrond are shown the pass of Mount Furlo and the river Metauro.  The artist mean to prefigure the future successes of  the Romans, the people of Romulus. In fact the marshes   downstream from the pass were the field of a smashing victory against the Carthaginians . In the pivotal  Battle of the Metaurus (207 b.c.) the double roman army put to rout  Hasdrubal Barca ad his men. Consuls were Marcus Livius Salinator and Caius Claudius Nero.

ROMOLO E REMO

Carla Roselli raffigura in questo dipinto il mandriano che trovò, per volere divino, i gemelli Romolo e Remo. Accanto siede la lupa fulva, animale sacro al loro padre, che li salvò dalle acque.

Sullo sfondo sono rappresentati il passo della Gola del Furlo ed il fiume Metauro. L’artista intende prefigurare i futuri successi dei Romani, il popolo di Romolo. Infatti gli acquitrini a valle del passo furono teatro di una strepitosa vittoria contro i Cartaginesi. Nella cruciale battaglia del Metauro (207 a.c.) il doppio esercito romano sbaragliò Asdrubale Barca e i suoi uomini. Consoli furono Caio Claudio Nerone e Marco Livio Salinatore.

FURY, GODDESS OF VENGEANCE

Another scene of the battle between gods and giants is here depicted by Carla Roselli. The Fury, one of the chthonian gods, hits a earth-born creature. She does that with an artifact imbued with power. It’s a golden vessel  girdled by serpents, the sight of which freezes with fear. The red bitch that bounces to shred the chrushed foe is customary precursor of the numen.

FURIA, DEA DELLA VENDETTA

Un’altra scena della battaglia fra dei e giganti è qui dipinta da Carla Roselli. La Furia, una delle divinità ctonie, colpisce una terrigena creatura. Lo fà con un artefatto imbevuto di potere. BACCHUS, BRINGER OF LIGHT

Here, of the gods, is depicted by Vanessa Foschi Bacchus, also called the light-bringer (Phosphorus) . At his feet twirls the ivy that protected him from the flames of his first birth. On his shoulders twist the snakes with which his father crowned him. On the right are the mountains of Crete  where he was brought up by  Rhea/Cybele, his grandmother.

Qui, fra gli dei, è dipinto da Vanessa Foschi Bacco, anche chiamato il “Portatore di luce” (Fosforo). Ai suoi piedi serpeggia l’edera, che lo protesse dalle fiamme alla sua prima nascita. BACCHUS, MASTER OF THE VINE

Vanessa Foschi here portrays  the most jocund of the olympian gods. He is wreathed with clusters of grapes and corymbs of vine.

His animal is the tiger, beast of “fearful symmetry” with eyes “burning bright in the forests of the night”.

BACCHUS, GOD WITH BULL’S HORNS

In this canvas Vanessa Foschi paints  Bacchus, to whom Zeus himself, father of the gods, gave birth the second time. He did so after having grafted him in his thigh with golden clasps.

Like the fluvial gods, even Bacchus has taurine horns. He, amid the vegetation, quickens the growth of the seeds in the soil. In the same way, like a lens, magnifies the natural drives of the human psyche.

BACCO, DIO DALLE CORNA DI TORO

In questa tela Vanessa Foschi  dipinge Bacco, cui Zeus stesso, il padre degli dei, diede la luce la seconda volta. Lo fece dopo averlo innestato nel suo polpaccio con fibbie d’oro.

Come gli dei fluviali, anche Bacco è dotato di corna taurine. Egli, fra la vegetazione, stimola e accelera la crescita dei semi nel terreno. Allo stesso modo, come una lente, ingrandisce e rinvigorisce gli impulsi naturali della psiche umana.

THE AWAKENING OF ARIADNE

In this canvas by Carla Roselli, Bacchus awakens Ariadne,  in ancient times  worshipped amid  the indigetes gods  of Naxos. The conventional narrative makes her the daughter of king Minos of Crete. She was the one who led  Theseus out of the labyrinth with her yarn.

The athenian hero afterwars left her in the isle of Naxos, some say willingly. The Athenians claimed that he was coerced to do so by Bacchus, in a dream.

IL RISVEGLIO DI ARIANNA

In questa tela di Carla Roselli, Bacco risveglia Arianna, anticamente venerata fra le divinità indigete di Nasso. La tradizione vulgata ne fa  la figlia di Minosse, re di Creta. Fu lei che condusse fuori dal labirinto Teseo grazie al suo filo.

L’eroe ateniese poi la abbandonò sull’isola di Nasso, alcuni dicono volontariamente. Gli Ateniesi sostennero che fu forzato ad agire così da Bacco, in un sogno.

BACCHUS AND ARIADNE

Working on this painting, Carla Roselli focuses her attention, in the assembly of the gods, on Bacchus and Ariadne. Returning from the Indian expedition, the victorious god came upon the princess in the Island of Naxos. He immediadely fell in love with her and proved so immortalizing her crown among the stars. He remained always faithfull to her.

An absolute beauty can  draw from heaven the  king of the gods, here represented by Carla Roselli as an  eagle. Beauty acts a mirror of  the divine,  and is able to render timeless her possessor. That is exempliflied in the myth of Ganymede, grasped by the captivated numen. The beautiful sheperd, prince of Troy, in a dashing flight,  ascended among the immortals.

RHEA  AND AMALTHEA

Carla Roselli portrays in this canvas Rhea/Cybele, mother of the gods, who likes to dwell in the mountains. Next to the goddess, is little Zeus hidden by her in the isle of Crete. He sits with his nurse, the goat Amalthea.

Rhea is  leading a winged chariot  drawn by serpents, later prerogative of the daughter Demeter.

On the frieze is engraved a  feat of adult Zeus, the crossing from Phoenicia to Crete  in  form of   bull. Princess Europe holds onto his back.

REA E AMALTEA

Carla Roselli raffigura in questa tela Rea/Cibele, gran madre degli dei, che ama dimorare sulle montagne. Accanto alla dea c’è il piccolo Zeus, da lei nascosto sull’isola di Creta. Egli siede con la sua nutrice, la capra Amaltea.

Rea è  alla guida di un carro alato  trainato da serpenti, successivo appannaggio della figlia Demetra.

Sul fregio è intarsiata un’ impresa di Zeus adulto, la traversata dalla Fenicia a Creta in forma di  toro. La principessa Europa si aggrappa sulla sua groppa.

HECATE, SHE WHO SHOWS THE WAY

In this canvas Carla Roselli shows Hecate, one of the ancients gods. Wielding a flaming torch, she  fights against the Giant Clytius .

According to Hesiod she is the only begotten daughter of the Titans Perses and Asteria ; in the orphic tradition she was born of of Zeus and Demeter like Persephone.

She was the only one that showed Demeter the whereabouts of her daughter, when she was searching for her.

Unlike the other Titans she wasn’t deprived of her dues of old by Zeus but mantained her honours. She also shares in the privileges of all the sky-borns.

Also known as the three-formed goddess of crossroads, she bestows  success to whom invokes her and multiplies riches.

ECATE, COLEI CHE MOSTRA IL CAMMINO

In questa tela Carla Roselli mostra Ecate, una degli antichi dei. Brandendo una torcia infuocata, combatte contro il Gigante Clizio.

Secondo Esiodo è la figlia unigenita dei Titani Perse e Asteria; nella tradizione orfica  è nata da Zeus e Demetra come Persefone.

Fu l’unica che mostrò a Demetra il luogo in cui si trovava sua figlia quando la dea la cercava.

Non fu privata dei suoi antichi diritti da Zeus come gli altri Titani ma mantenne i suoi onori. Partecipa anche dei privilegi di tutti gli altri figli di Urano.

Conosciuta anche come triforme dea dei crocicchi, concede successo a chi la invoca e moltiplica ricchezze.

IO, THE WANDERER

Paintress Carla Roselli in this canvas depicts Io, daughter of Inachus one of the fluvial gods of Argolis. She has already  acquired the shape of a cow. In this form she wandered through earth and sea . At last she came to Egypt where Zeus joined with her with a  light touch. She regained her human figure and gave birth to Epaphus, ancestor of Cadmus.

Io later was  identified with Isis, egyptian goddess represented with heifer’s horns and Epaphus  with Apis, the sacred bull of Memphis.

In the left is Hermes, with his gonden sword and a cock, his sacred bird . He is the slayer of Argos “all-eyes”, the guardian of the cow  .

On the right sit Hera with a peacock on which she has just applied the eyes of slain Argus. She has a cuckoo bird in her lap,  form in which Zeus woed her as a girl. With her foot the queen of the gods presses a pomegranate,  her fruit.

IO, LA VIAGGIATRICE

La pittrice Carla Roselli in questa tela dipinge Io, figlia di Inaco, uno degli dei fluviali dell’Argolide. La principessa ha già acquisito l’aspetto di una giovenca. In questa forma ella vagò per terra e per mare. Alla fine giunse in Egitto dove Zeus si unì a lei con un leggero tocco. Ella riprese la sua figura umana e diede alla luce Epafo, antenato di Cadmo.

Io in seguito fu identificata con Iside, dea egizia raffigurata con corna bovine, ed Epafo con Api, il bue sacro di Menfi.

Sulla sinistra c’è Ermes, con la sua spada d’oro ed un gallo, uccello a lui sacro. Egli è l’uccisore di Argo “Tuttocchi”, il guardiano della mucca.

A destra siede Era con un pavone sul quale ella ha appena applicato gli occhi dell’ucciso Argo, ricolmando in tal modo le stirpi dei pavoni di grazia ridente (Lucretius, De Rerum Natura, II, 503, aurea pavonum ridenti imbuta lepore/saecla). Ha un cuculo in grembo, forma in cui Zeus la corteggiò da ragazza. Con il piede preme una melograna, il suo frutto.

ARTEMIS, GODDESS OF THE HUNT

Paintress Carla Roselli in this canvas depicts  Artemis, who, among the olympian gods, loves the hunt above all. The goddess is indomitable and uncatchable and, like her brother Apollo, endowed with an unreachable beauty.

She showes her benevolence through her voice, never to be seen(Euripides, Hippolytus, prologue). Like all the gods, just her heavenly smell revives  the strenghts ((Euripides, Hippolytus, v.1391).

The little-ones of all creatures are protected by her.

In this painting she wields her golden bow with which she unfailingly hits the target.

She is accompanied by a feline as in the ark of Cypselus in Olympia she was engraved holding a panther and a lion (Pausanias V).

The peaks on the background are that of Cretan Ida.

ARTEMIS, DEA DELLA CACCIA

L’artista Carla Roselli in questa tela dipinge Artemis che, fra gli dei olimpici, più di tutti ama la caccia. La dea è indomabile, imprendibile e, come il fratello Apollo, dotata di un’irraggiungibile bellezza.

Ella mostra la sua benevolenza, tramite la voce, senza  mai rendersi visibile (Euripide, “Ippolito”, prologo). Come tutti gli dei, basta il suo solo divino profumo a ridare le forze (Euripide, “Ippolito”, v. 1391).

I piccoli di tutte le creature sono da lei protetti.

In questa tela brandisce l’arco d’oro con cui colpisce infallibilmente il bersaglio.

La dea è accompagnata da un felino così come nell’arca di Cipselo ad Olimpia è raffigurata nell’atto di tenere una pantera e un leone (Pausania V).

Zeus/Iuppiter, the most beneficial of the gods, is  here represented by artist Carla Roselli in the form of a swan. Leda, queen of Sparta, offers him a branch of myrtle, plant sacred to Venus. She also wears a golden wreath of the same tree.

From the union was born an egg from which emerged Helen and Pollux, one of the Dioscuri. The daughter of Leda  was white and soft as a swan (Lucian of Samosata “The judgement of the goddesses”). She  was dearest to Venus among mortal women . Helen possessed a “face that launched a thousend ships and burnt the toplees towers of Ilium” (Marlowe, “Dr. Faustus”).

The twins Dioscuri, strong warriors on horseback, decide the fate of the armies alongside which intervene. They proved it, among other things, in the battle of lake Regillus , in favour of the Romans and in the disappearance of  Aristomenes’s shield in the messenian wars.

Invoked, they also ensure the safety of seafarers, sweeping down on tawny wings, during terrifying squalls (Homeric Hymns).

ZEUS E LEDA

Zeus/Iuppiter, il più giovevole fra gli dei, è qui rappresentato da Carla Roselli in forma di cigno. Leda, regina di Sparta, gli porge un rametto di mirto, pianta sacra a Venere. Indossa una ghirlanda d’oro dello stesso albero.

Dall’unione divina nacque un uovo  da cui emersero Elena e Polluce, uno dei  Dioscuri. La figlia di Leda era bianca e morbida come un cigno (Luciano di Samosata, “Il giudizio delle dee”). Ella fu prediletta da Venere fra le donne mortali. Elena possedette il volto che mobilitò le mille navi che bruciarono le superbe torri di Ilio.

I  gemelli Dioscuri, forti guerrieri montati a cavallo, decidono le sorti degli eserciti al cui fianco intervengono. Lo dimostrarono, tra l’altro, nella battaglia del lago Regillo a favore dei Romani e nella sparizione dello scudo di Aristomene nelle guerre messeniche.

Se invocati garantiscono anche la salvezza dei naviganti, durante le turbinose procelle, sfrecciando giù con fulve ali (Inni Omerici).

IACCHUS

Persephone, daughter of Demeter/Deo, was the most desired  by the gods. She lived in a cave and had two big serpents, put there by the mother, to watch her. Zeus became a beautiful serpent oozing ambrosia instead of venom and joined with her. From the union was born Iacchus, god with bull’s horns.

Nonnos of Panopolis, in the “Dionysiaca”, narrates that Hera, Zeus’s wife, wanted to destroy little Iacchus.  She sent Titans that covered their features  with gypsum. To distract the young god they used a chest filled with these toys : the spinning top, the fleece, the pinwhell, the dice and the mirror. Especially by the mirror the child god, who never saw his shining beauty, was captivated . While he was so distracted the Titans assaulted him and tore him to pieces. From the drops of blood, fallen on the ground, took shape the red pomegranate’seeds.

Athena saved the heart and Zeus used it to regenerate the god with Semele, and so Bacchus was born.

IACCO

Persefone, figlia di Demetra/Deo, era la più desiderata dagli dei. Viveva in una grotta e aveva due grossi serpenti, posti lì  dalla madre, a farle la guardia. Zeus divenne un bellissimo serpente stillante ambrosia invece di veleno e si congiunse a lei. Dall’unione nacque Iacco, dio dalle corna di toro.

Nonno di Panopoli, nelle “Dionisiache”, narra che Era, moglie di Zeus, voleva distruggere il piccolo Iacco. Ella inviò Titani che coprirono i loro lineamenti di gesso. Per distrarre il giovane dio essi usarono una cassa piena dei seguenti giocattoli: la trottola, la lana, la girandola, i dadi e lo specchio. Soprattutto dallo specchio il dio bambino, che non aveva mai visto la sua sfolgorante bellezza, rimase avvinto. Mentre egli era così distratto i Titani lo aggredirono e lo dilaniarono. Dalle gocce di sangue cadute a terra si formarono i rossi semi della melograna.

Atena salvò il cuore e Zeus lo utilizzò per rigenerare il dio con Semele e così nacque Bacco.

LITTLE DIONYSUS

Among the gods, Dionysus/Bacchus was the inventor of wine. According to Nonnos of Panopolis he was inspired by the view of snakes eating grapes. Due to the crushing of their teeth, from their jaws dripped a red frothing  liquid. So he taught men to press the vine’s fruit using a concave stone.

During the indian expedition Dionysus  turned the water of rivers into wine to inebriate his enemies. Although being the bringer of joy and lighheartedness during feasts, he never gets drunks.

IL PICCOLO DIONISO

Fra gli dei Dioniso/Bacco fu l’inventore del vino. Secondo Nonno di Panopolis fu ispirato dalla vista di serpenti che mangiavano dell’uva. Per schiacciamento dei denti, dalle loro mascelle colava un rosso liquido schiumante. Così  egli insegnò agli uomini a pigiare il frutto della vite usando una pietra concava.

Durante la spedizione indiana Dioniso mutò in vino l’acqua dei fiumi per inebriare i suoi nemici. Pur essendo apportatore di gioia e spensieratezza, durante feste e conviti, non diventa mai ubriaco.

In questa tela Carla Roselli dipinge il piccolo Dioniso seduto su una lince. In primo piano ci sono recipienti d’oro cesellato colmi di vino.

CHIRONE E ACHILLE

Nella creazione del dipinto “Chirone e Achille” Carla Roselli si è ispirata alla mitologia greco-romana. In particolare focalizza la sua attenzione sul centauro Chirone, figlio del Titano spodestato Crono e di Filira. Egli era famoso per la sua saggezza. Aveva insegnato, tra l’altro, le virtù delle erbe ad Asceplio, figlio di Apollo e l’arte della musica ad Achille figlio di Peleo e Teti. Su quest’ultimo volge la sua attenzione la pittrice. La scena è  ambientata, sul monte Pelio, in Tessaglia dimora del mitico centauro.

La pittrice è autodidatta ed è nata a Mondaino,  paese della Romagna, nell’anno 1951. Vive a Morciano di Romagna, nella provincia di Rimini, in Italia.

CHIRON AND ACHILLES

In the creation of the  painting “Chiron and Achilles” Carla Roselli, drew her inspiration from greco-roman mythology. In particular she focuses her attention on the centaur Chiron, son of the dethroned Titan Cronus and of Philyra. He was renowned  for his wisdom. He taught, among other things, the properties of the herbs to Asclepius, son of Apollo, and the art of music to Achilles, son of Peleus and Thetis. On the latter the paintress turns her attention. The scene takes place on Mount Pelion, in Thessaly,  where  dwelled the mythic centaur.

The paintress is autodidact and is born in Mondaino, a village in Romagna, in the year 1951. She lives in Morciano di Romagna, Italy.

For “Flora” Carla Roselli   was inspired by roman mythology. In her art she especially focuses on beauty’s exaltation.

In this painting, the goddess of flowers leads a chariot drawn by tawny horses. On the background is an ancient temple in vibrant colors. In the foreground are depicted bright flowers .

The paintress is autodidact and is born in Mondaino, a village in Romagna, in the year 1951. She lives in Morciano di Romagna, Italy.

TRITON AND NAIAD

In this painting Carla Roselli depicts two aquatic gods, a Triton holding a Naiad. Tritons are meremen who could appease the waves of the raging sea with the sound of their trumpeting instruments . Virgil, in the first book of Eneid, shows them taking orders directly from Poseidon/Neptune,  master of the third part of the world. Naiads are embodiments of sweets waters, clear springs in particular.

TRITONE E NAIADE

In questo dipinto Carla Roselli raffigura due divinità acquatiche, un Tritone e una Naiade. I Tritoni erano creature  dalla duplice natura che potevano placare la furia delle onde del mare al suono dei loro strumenti squillanti. Virgilio, nel primo libro dell'”Eneide” li mostra prendere ordini direttamente da Poseidone /Nettuno, signore della terza parte del mondo. Le Naiadi erano incarnazioni dei corpi d’acqua dolce, in particolare delle limpide sorgenti.

POSEIDON, KING OF THE SEA

In this painting by Carla Roselli, in depicted Poseidon, brother of Zeus, the master of the sea and of all the waters. He, among the gods, had the power of protecting from earthquakes, as well as to cause them, driving his chariot underground. For this reason he is called the Earth-shaker, and Peloponnese, greek region notorious for its seismicity, was his favourite dwelling.

He stands on a golden chariot driven by dolphins, animals sacred to him, as in his temples at Corinth and at Cape Tenarus, in accordance with the account of Pausanias.

The god is together with Amphitrite, his wife.

POSEIDONE, SIGNORE DEL MARE

In questo dipinto di Carla Roselli è raffigurato Poseidone, fratello di Zeus, signore del mare e di tutte le acque. Fra gli dei ha il potere di proteggere dai terremoti, così come di causarli, guidando il suo carro sottoterra. Per questa ragione è chiamato lo Scuotitore della terra, e il Peloponneso, regione greca famosa per la sua attività sismica, era considerata la sua residenza favorita.

Sta su un carro d’oro trainato da delfini, animali a lui sacri, come nei suoi templi a Corinto e al Tenaro, secondo la testimonianza di Pausania.

Insieme a lui c’è la moglie Anfitrite.

ENYALIOS ARES

Enyalios Ares the terrible god (Homer, Iliad, 17, 211), always engaged in duels, fights and wars,  is the inspirer of this work by italian painter Vanessa Foschi.

Like red flame of voracious fire or flooding river that everything sweeps away, Ares, god of war, is burning, rushing, overwhelming  and fearless.

Athena (Homer, Iliad, V) calls him bloody subverter of walls.

As  foaming steed the deity is fiery .

The divinity personifies the explosive fighting spirit. The bravest ancient warriors, aetolian Tydeus, Diomedes’s father,  amongst them,  bore him in their heart (Euripides, Phoenicians, 134).

GOD OF HEAVENLY FIRE

According to John the Lydian (Liber de mensibus, II pag. 25), as Hephaestus is the embodiment of earth’s fire so Ares incarnates the heavenly one. Ethereal, generative fire that reaches all perceptible nature. For this reason myths pair Aphrodite off sometimes with Hephaestus sometimes with Ares, because through these two principles everything springs up.

SON OF ZEUS AND HERA

In the painting, Ares  son of Hera and Zeus (the shining ones, as indicates the etymology) is accompanied with little Dionysos/Bacchus, ripped at birth from the fire of the paternal thunderbolt. Horatius (Carmina, II, 19, vv. 25- 28) declares that Dionysos, even though more suitable for dances and fooling around, is the pivot that stands between peace and war. The god is sitting on a tiger.
