Liber Bacchus, god of completion

LIBER, GOD OF COMPLETION

Varro (“Rerum Divinarum Libri”, quoted by Augustine, De civitate Dei, V, 9) argued that Liber was so called by liberation. In fact the males in the sexual act for his benefit were freed with the emission of  seed. For this reason, women used to place the effigy of the part of the body involved in his temples. They then added the attributes and some wine to excite the desire. Liber’s female counterpart was Libera, who they believed to be Venus herself.

Liberum a liberamentum appellatum volunt quod mares per eius beneficium emissis seminibus in coeundo liberentur. […] Et ob haec Libero eandem corporis parte in templo poni. Ad haec addunt mulieres attributas Libero et vinum propter libidimem concitandam

VINIPOLLENS LEPIDUS LIBER

Varrone (“Rerum Divinarum Libri”, citato da Agostino, De civitate Dei, V, 9) sosteneva che Liber fosse così chiamato dal liberamento.

Infatti i maschi  nell’atto sessuale per suo beneficio si liberavano con l’emissione del seme. Per questo  le donne solevano porre nei suoi templi l’effigie della parte del corpo coinvolta. Vi aggiungevano poi gli attributi e del vino per eccitare il desiderio.

Controparte femminile di Liber era Libera, che ritenevano fosse la stessa Venere.
