QUIRINUS ROMULUS

Quirinus, the roman god known in his human life as Romulus, is here represented by Carla Roselli.

The surname Quirinus means master of war (bellorum potentem) and derives from curis the Sabin denomination of the spear (Macrobius, Saturnalia, I, 9).

ROMULUS, THE FOUNDER

Ennius, quoted by Cicero, “De re publica” I,41, hails the first king of Rome with these words : “O Romule, Romule die, /qualem te patriae custodem di genuerunt! /O pater, o genitor, o sanguen dis oriundum!/ Tu produxisti nos intra luminis oras.” “O Romulus, godlike Romulus, what a guardian of the country the deities made you! O father, o parent, o blood flowing from the gods! You led us into the lands of light”.

During the sabin wars he killed the king of Caenina in a duel and preyed on his armour .  In roman history  he was the first to bring back a royal panoply as spoils of honor. Then he consacretated them by an oak on the Capitol where he vowed a temple to Juppiter/Jove.

In the painting  by Carla Roselli the eagle, being as said by Pindar “àrchos oionòn”, the chief of birds (Pindar, Pythian I, v.11) stands for the kingship deriving from Iuppiter/Zeus (Homer, Iliad, I, vv. 238, 239 and v. 279).

The corinthian capital forshadows the luster of the future empire.

The fasces and the rods in the variant “Romulus Lictor” by Carla Roselli symbolize the authority and the power of life and death on subjects and legionaries.

ROMOLO QUIRINO

Quirinus, il dio romano conosciuto nella sua vita umana con il nome di Romolo, è qui rappresentato da Carla Roselli.

L’appellativo di Quirinus significa maestro di guerra (bellorum potentem) e deriva da curis la denominazione sabina della lancia (Macrobius, Saturnalia, I, 9).

ROMOLO, IL FONDATORE

Ennio, citato da Cicerone, “De re publica” I,41, saluta il primo re di Roma con queste parole: “O Romolo, Romolo divino, quale custode della patria gli dei ti generarono! O padre, o progenitore, o sangue sgorgato dagli dei! Tu ci conducesti nelle regioni della luce”.

Durante i conflitti con i Sabini egli uccise il re di Cenina in singolar tenzone e ne predò le armi . Fu il primo, nella storia di Roma, a riportare le cosiddette “spoglie opime”. Poi consacrò l’armatura regale presso una quercia sul Campidoglio dove avrebbe costruito il tempio di Giove Feretrio.

Nel dipinto di Carla Roselli, l’aquila, essendo il capo degli uccelli, come cantato da Pindaro (Pindaro, Pitica I, v.11) , rappresenta la regalità  derivante da Iuppiter/Zeus (Omero, Iliade, I vv.238,239 e v. 279).

Il capitello corinzio prefigura i fasti del futuro impero.

I fasci e le verge nella variante “Romulus Lictor” di Carla Roselli, simboleggiano l’autorità e il potere di vita e di morte su sudditi e legionari.
